Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among a great many British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports IS still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
